One overlooked #mastodon feature I enjoy is knowing that reading a toot or opening an image isn't contributing to some advertising algorithm's dataset on me and my purchasing preferences.

Open Tech Will Save Us is back today at 16:00 UTC. We will talk about resilience and digital activities off the grid.

The theme of the episode is Open Tech for Resilience. We will talk about distributed storage on old computers, and how to offer apps and messaging off the grid.

In 4 hours I'm going to pick up my boyfriend at the airport 🥰. Four months is a long time away from home!

The finance sector doesn't make things. It doesn't grow food. It doesn't teach your kids. It doesn't heal your injuries. It doesn't house you. It doesn't clothe you. Finance for its own sake makes nothing - except money. Our future survival depends on radical, mass-scale material production. So long as the finance sector is running the show, all we'll get is a casino.

A reminder that Mastodon and the Fediverse do NOT use cryptocurrency, blockchains, NFTs, tokens, coins, mining, web3 or anything like that.

Masto and the Fedi run on traditional servers and use a sustainable network federation model somewhat similar to e-mail (that's why Fediverse addresses look similar to e-mail addresses).

Also a reminder there are no venture capital firms or other investors either. No one owns the network, each server is independent. Masto and Fedi server running costs are paid by their owners, sometimes with donations from users.

No one is getting rich from the Fediverse, it is all volunteers with some getting donations and a few getting modest grants from foundations. Please remember this when you interact with admins or developers.

(There might be some individual users who post about cryptocurrency/blockchain, but the infrastructure this place runs on doesn't use it at all.)

Tl:dr - Decentralisation does NOT mean cryptocurrency/blockchain

Developing Mastodon, I strive to use terminology that is familiar to as many people as possible so as to not put up unnecessary barriers in understanding. For this reason I am happy that we went away from calling posts "toots". It has always been a point of friction for people. Not that I dislike branding, quite the opposite, but in my experience receiving feedback over half a decade, it had a negative effect on the platform for little benefit.

What is it that's so good about that makes tech communities move there? Why not stick with open standards like or even (for us elderly folks).

I find that it just adds to the fragmentation because now we all have to log in to yet another (!) platform to stay connected to that part of our sphere of interest. And honestly, I forget to, so I miss out on some otherwise interesting conversations.

Out taking a walk for the first time this week after being ill. I decided to find some water to walk by, it always does wonders for my mind.

Reminder why Forums are great and Discord sucks.

Googled something I needed today and where did it lead me? To a post on my own forum 😅 with the exact fix.

Search engines don't get Discord but they do get Forums.

Put guides on Forums pleeeeaaase.

This is my last post that will be crossposted from the fediverse to Twitter. There are folks here with legitimate reasons to not want their posts forwarded to that hellhole and I want to be able to boost their thoughts while respecting their wishes and safety.

I was crossposting to raise awareness about the fediverse. Chances are, if you’re not interested yet, you won’t be.

You can keep following me at and learn more about the fediverse at
