A reminder that Mastodon and the Fediverse do NOT use cryptocurrency, blockchains, NFTs, tokens, coins, mining, web3 or anything like that.
Masto and the Fedi run on traditional servers and use a sustainable network federation model somewhat similar to e-mail (that's why Fediverse addresses look similar to e-mail addresses).
Also a reminder there are no venture capital firms or other investors either. No one owns the network, each server is independent. Masto and Fedi server running costs are paid by their owners, sometimes with donations from users.
No one is getting rich from the Fediverse, it is all volunteers with some getting donations and a few getting modest grants from foundations. Please remember this when you interact with admins or developers.
(There might be some individual users who post about cryptocurrency/blockchain, but the infrastructure this place runs on doesn't use it at all.)
Tl:dr - Decentralisation does NOT mean cryptocurrency/blockchain
Developing Mastodon, I strive to use terminology that is familiar to as many people as possible so as to not put up unnecessary barriers in understanding. For this reason I am happy that we went away from calling posts "toots". It has always been a point of friction for people. Not that I dislike branding, quite the opposite, but in my experience receiving feedback over half a decade, it had a negative effect on the platform for little benefit.

What is it that's so good about #Discord that makes tech communities move there? Why not stick with open standards like #Matrix or even #IRC (for us elderly folks).
I find that it just adds to the fragmentation because now we all have to log in to yet another (#proprietary!) platform to stay connected to that part of our sphere of interest. And honestly, I forget to, so I miss out on some otherwise interesting conversations.

This is my last post that will be crossposted from the fediverse to Twitter. There are folks here with legitimate reasons to not want their posts forwarded to that hellhole and I want to be able to boost their thoughts while respecting their wishes and safety.
I was crossposting to raise awareness about the fediverse. Chances are, if you’re not interested yet, you won’t be.
You can keep following me at https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral and learn more about the fediverse at https://fediverse.info
Upgrading my home firewall #OPNSense from v21.7 -> 22.1. Fingers crossed I still have internet afterwards!
Hello world!
Reminder: if, like me, you just arrived here from twitter, then nobody knows who you are. And if you don't put something in your profile, it makes it really hard to reconnect with you (even if it's just "I'm on twitter as @cstross)!
If you're currently on a massive server like mastodon.social, you might want to consider moving your account to a smaller server.
You can keep your followers when you change servers, here's how to do it: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107939441820299376
You can find reliable servers at https://joinmastodon.org/communities (all the servers listed there agree to the covenant at https://joinmastodon.org/covenant). Try to pick one with fewer people.
There are lots of good things about smaller servers:
-Better moderation, because there are more staff per member.
-Smaller servers tend to have more personality, with a village feel.
-The local timeline on smaller servers is much more readable.
-Smaller servers protect the Fediverse as a whole from being taken over, because lots of smaller servers are harder to buy than a few big servers.
-It's easier to make a difference on smaller servers. It's easier to discuss things with the admin and other members.
Hvor får man de bedste Buffalo wings i København? #dkmastodon
How can I improve the https://fediverse.info people directory?
I have a few ideas:
- Allow registration via statuses that contain hashtag topics so you don't need to pollute your bio
- User avatars (held off on this as it would require moderation)
- Topic intersection (group results by multiple topics)
- Filter by instance/domain
- Use localStorage to keep track of profiles you seen to show fresher results
Any more? Boosts appreciated! #fediverseInfo #activitypub
Husk at der er #CryptoAarhus lørdag d. 14/5 kl. 13-17 på Fairbar i Aarhus.
Ses vi? Det gør vi da 😀
I'm one of those all-round #geeks who grew up with #computers in the era of the C64 and onwards. Main interests nowadays are #privacy, #security, #science as well as a ton of other more or less obscure topics. And hanging out with smart, interesting and/or fun people.
